The recording of each soldier’s rank in the 1914-15 Star and British War and Victory
Medal rolls differed in that the 1914-15 Star roll recorded the rank as that held
at the time of entry into a theatre of war whereas the British War and Victory Medal
roll recorded the highest rank held whilst serving overseas.
For consistency the nominal rolls have been created using those ranks as recorded
on the British War & Victory Medal rolls as the majority of the men would be entitled
to those two medals. However, if a man was also entitled to the 1914-15 Star then
that rank is also recorded.
