The Old and the Bold

Second Reinforcement Draft Roll

An incomplete nominal roll of those men who formed the second reinforcement draft to be sent to the 25th Battalion Royal Fusiliers in East Africa.  The reinforcement draft proceeded overseas aboard the s.s. “Ajana” on 17th October 1916 and, although not mentioned in the embarkation return (1), it is believed that this draft numbered 106 men under the command of an as yet unidentified officer (2).  The draft was comprised of men posted from the 5th (Reserve) Battalion Royal Fusiliers, many of whom had previously been recruited to the 25th Battalion’s Reserve Company but had not gone to East Africa with the first reinforcement draft.  As can be seen below it has been possible to positively identify about two-thirds of the draft at this time.

This nominal roll has been created from a number of sources, primarily the British War & Victory Medal Roll and surviving service records where available.  Wherever possible I have identified the man with the rank he held when he proceeded overseas but, due to the way the ranks were recorded on the medal roll, this isn’t always possible and could be a higher rank subsequently held.
